Construction Laborer Job Description

Job Description: Perform tasks involving physical labor at heavy construction projects. May operate a variety of hand and power tools. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris and remove waste materials. May assist other craft workers.

Wage Status: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)

Essential Functions

  • SITE SAFETY – All laborers are expected to have a minimum of OSHA 10 and are responsible for tasks assigned being completed as safely as possible. IF YOU need additional PPE equip to perform said task, go back and get that equip or request it. If you see anyone performing work in the course of your day that you believe is unsafe, you are to report it immediately to a supervisor and assist in rendering the area safe. DO NOT complete a task unless it can be done in a safe manner. If you see a hazard, fix it if its in your purview, report it to a supervisor if it is not in your purview.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor, perform manual work in preparing surfaces for paving.
  • Maintain a clean job site: pick up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Material handling and storage.
  • Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials.
  • Prep, install and anchor hole covers
  • Install safety rails
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention to your supervisor, VP of Construction or HR Manager.
  • Assist in building structures for residential, business, and construction sites.
  • Participate in demolitions.
  • Remove debris.
  • Assist construction managers.
  • Install traffic control devices.
  • Remove material on site in an area to prepare for subsequent trade work
  • General clean up

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in heavy/highway construction work.
  • Some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.

Work Context

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
  • Excellent stamina is required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (at least 60 lbs), climb ladders up to 24 ft, stand and walk for 8 hours, and perform other physically demanding duties as directed.
  • Attendance is an imperative job function.
  • Employees must fulfill the performance standards of this position and comply with policies, rules and procedures of the company, including those set out in the Employee Handbook or otherwise communicated (verbally or writing) to employees.
