The Director of Construction to work at the direction of the Chief Operating Officer and play a critical role in delivering quality, safe, reliable, and profitable projects with a customer focused mindset whereby character, integrity, work ethic, and treatment of people is inherent. A major part of your overall duties and responsibilities will be the training and development of Area Supervisors and Superintendents with an influential component with Project Managers.
Summary: The Director of Construction at Stansell Construction is an integral member of the Organization to lead the field execution teams to deliver successful projects by developing the Area Supervisors and Superintendents to be top tier professionals in their role. A successful Director of Construction at Stansell is a good communicator, teammate, leader, influencer, time manager, and trainer, as well as working and leading with an ever-mindful sense of urgency keeping customer focus at the center of everything they do. They shall have strong technical prowess, strong ability to read and breakdown drawings and other bid related documents, exceptional building methods and sequencing strategy, as well as a solid understanding of the financial workings of a construction project. They should exhibit experience leading people in the construction industry as well as being able to work closely with Project Managers and Project Coordinators leading them towards successful project set-ups in the preconstruction phase, proactive planning and communication during the building phase, and urgency to create a great customer experience during the turnover and post construction phases. They must be willing and able to work in a fast-paced environment and interact effectively, while being remote and working with multiple remote employees. They must be committed to effectively using the company’s software and technology, while also spending the necessary time to teach others to do the same. They must exemplify leadership in crucial conversations across all spectrums of the construction environment, including but not limited to: client interaction, trade partner relationships, and internal organizational influence.
Responsibilities: Visit projects with Area Supervisors to observe and coach their leadership to support and develop Superintendents. Assign Area Supervisors to projects. Approve Superintendent project assignments. Communicate and hold field personnel accountable for execution of processes. Develop and communicate field processes as needed. Approve monetary project bonuses for Area Supervisors and Superintendents. Lead hiring and performance validation of new Area Supervisors and Superintendents. Identify the skill levels of Area Supervisors and Superintendents as it relates to safety, schedule, and quality and develop a plan to raise the bar. Monitor projects in BuildR to ensure superintendents are properly prepared for project starts. Coordinate and lead relevant communication touchpoints with Area Supervisors and Superintendents to forge comradery and consistent execution of processes. Consistently challenge us to do better and bring new ideas and suggestions freely to leadership.
Qualifications and Requirements: 10+ years of experience in commercial construction, ideally in QSR, retail, or similar ground-up environments. Familiarity with fast paced construction timelines, site-adapted prototyping, and cost controls on franchise-driven programs is highly preferred. Strong working knowledge of trade scopes involved in ground-up construction (civil, structural, MEP, finishes). Ability to perform quantity take-offs for all divisions of construction and provide/track unit costs. Ability to create and critically analyze project schedules. High attention to detail with a proactive, organized, and solution-driven mindset. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with tools like Bluebeam, Building Connected, Procore, or Sage Estimating is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills; confident engaging with both subcontractors and internal teams.
