Lineman Pre-Apprentice (Construction)

The Lineman Pre-Apprentice position is the beginningof a multi-step progression to Journeyman Lineman. A Pre-Apprentice Lineman isa trainee who builds skills and understanding to progress into ApprenticeLineman status and begin progressing toward a career as a Journeyman Lineman.
Candidate for this position must have a valid Class ACommercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
EPB prefers candidates with previous pole climbingtraining and experience.
Those accepted for the Lineman Pre-Apprentice TrainingProgram are required to complete Linemen Pre-Apprentice Training ProgramClimbing School. Upon successful completion, the employee will be accepted as aLineman Pre-Apprentice Trainee.
At all stages, EPB reserves the right to determine ifthe Lineman Pre-Apprentice is meeting the requirements to progress in theprogram.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand andwork in accordance with Federal, State Regulations TOSHA 1910.269, NationalSafety Code, and EPB Safety Rules
- Meet EPB'sbehavioral and cultural expectations around a commitment to work, attitude, andability to work with others
- Assure timely andsafe delivery of equipment, tools, and materials and assist as EPB managementdirects
- Learn and adhereto appropriate construction standards, codes, and written safety rules andprocedures
- Job shadow fieldoperations team members across various departments as EPB management directs
- Attend safetymeetings and actively participate in safety awareness programs and activities
- Complete allnecessary company training promptly
- Perform pole topand bucket rescue
- Incorporate anattitude of "Excellent Customer Service Comes First" and"Quality Work Enhances Reliability" into daily tasks
- Assist linemen inall functions of constructing, servicing, and maintaining EPB's electrictransmission and distribution system
- Performs alltypes of manual labor, maintaining proper clearance from electric hazards
- Recognizes highvoltage hazards
- Work regularlyconsists of digging holes, loading and unloading trucks, ground support forjourneyman lineman, and assisting lineman with splicing wire and framing poles
- Properly rigloads and lines for lifting and pulling
- Sends tools andmaterials to the lineman as requested using a handline
- Assists inpreparing journeyman linemen's and foremen's vehicles and tools for dailyoperations
- Drive and operateall types of utility equipment including lift trucks, line trucks, andauxiliary equipment
- Installs anchors
- Fills out troubletickets on vehicles when required
- Keeps records ofand understands materials used
- Use hand andpower tools and equipment of the trade
- Capable ofworking after-hours in scheduled and unscheduled conditions and responding toafter-hours call-outs
- Must workevenings, weekends, and holidays, and overtime for emergency outage situations
- Must be capableof heavy manual labor for extended periods, day or night, in all weatherconditions
- Conductgroundwork
- Install, repair,and maintain overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxiliaryequipment
- Assure timely andsafe delivery of equipment, tools, and materials, and assist as directed by EPBmanagement
Education and Experience
- High schooldiploma or a GED certificate
Certification(s) & Other Requirements
- A valid Class ACommercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements
- Ability to readand comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
- Ability to readand comprehend operating and safety instructions on tools and materials
- Ability to applysound judgment and understanding to carry out instructions provided by EPBJourneyman Lineman and management
- Ability tounderstand and follow verbal instructions
- Ability toregularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms;climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; and talk or hear. Theemployee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionallyrequired to sit. The employee must occasionally exert a force of up to 100pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and/or constantly exertpressure up to 20 pounds to move objects. Specific vision abilities required bythis job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheralvision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- The ability tomaintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, orcrouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces
- Ability to dig a2' wide by 5' deep hole using hand tools
- Ability to pass afundamental work-related math test
- Ability to reportto work within 1 hour of the EPB Operations Center
- Ability to passclimbing school. Preferred candidates will have already had some climbingtraining or experience
- If a candidatehas been previously accepted into the Pre-Apprentice Lineman position but didnot complete climbing school, they are ineligible to apply for 365 calendardays
NOTE: Those employees in the Lineman Pre-ApprenticeTraining Program not making satisfactory progress or completing CraftExaminations shall remain in the Pre-Apprentice for three months and be broughtbefore the Apprentice Council for recommended additional training. Failure tomake satisfactory progress or complete a Craft Examination within the firstyear of employment shall result in termination.
Physical Demands - Additional Information
- While performingthe duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humidconditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weatherconditions; risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation; and vibration. Theemployee is frequently exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat. The employeeis occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or causticchemicals, and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usuallymoderate
- Required to liftand manipulate weights up to 75-100 pounds
- Works withindefined procedures; follows written or verbal instructions
- Hand and armdexterity for using small tools to repair connections for primary, secondary,and services on poles, houses, or meter centers while working out of a buckettruck, off a pole using climbers, off a ladder, or standing on the ground
- 20/20 correctedvision and have sufficient color vision perception to distinguish normal colorcoding used in electric distribution and transmission work
- Ability to walkon uneven terrain in and around the work area during daylight and darkness
- Normal orcorrected hearing proficiency to understand verbalinstructions/information/warnings communicated from the top of the pole, fromthe ground position, and from 1 pole span to the next (approximately 75meters)
