Project Architect The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development is seeking a Project Architect to join its Facility Design and Construction (FDC) Team. Tasked with interior facility design and construction, our team provides an outstanding opportunity to be a part of a highly unique, owner driven facility design team posed with unique design challenges. Located in Laurel, Maryland, midway between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC, with connections to regional commuter transportation on a 460-acre campus with over four million square feet of facilities, APL is the largest university affiliated research center, provides U.S. government agencies with innovative solutions in support of national priorities and technology development programs. The Laboratory serves as independent trusted technical agents to the government, providing opportunities for highly technical building systems.
As a Project Architect, you will have the opportunity to be a part of a highly unique, cross-disciplined owner and developer facility team. Your duties will include:
Generate designs, develop specifications, and document floor plan layouts, architectural interior and exterior systems, facility renovations, and ADA compliance in accordance with all applicable building codes
Interpret written technical requirements for unique equipment systems and deliver facility design solutions to accommodate requirements
Develop architectural documentation, probable labor and material cost estimates
Perform programming interviews, gather requirements, conduct field surveys, and document existing conditions for renovation and construction projects
Consult with customers in problem identification/problem solving for architectural, structural, and life safety issues
Ensure that the production of construction documents is in compliance with APL Standards and Guidelines
Perform constructability and compliance reviews for out-source AE designs
Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document work sessions at the project site
Reviews documents for alignment to current building and ADA codes
Incorporates Sustainable Design solutions into projects
May require operating APL vehicles and industrial equipment
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:
Possess a BS or equivalent in Architecture, registered in the state of Maryland, or are in the process of getting registered
Have 5+ years of experience as a Registered Architect for the planning, design and construction of complex projects
Are proficient in Revit
Have knowledge of architectural building systems
Possess a knowledge of building SMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IDP)
Have the ability to work with design teams on multiple small projects of a complex scope simultaneously
Performance of this job requires a valid state of residence driver's license. The selected candidate will be subject to a motor vehicle record check
Are able to obtain Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
