JOB SUMMARY
The ROAD CONSTRUCTION FLAGGER is responsible for ensuring the safety of construction crews and the traveling public by directing traffic in and around road construction zones. This position requires attentiveness, effective communication, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. CONTROL the flow of traffic safely through construction sites using signs, hand signals, and/or two-way radios.
2. SET UP and take down traffic control signs, cones, and barriers.
3. COMMUNICATE effectively with other flaggers, equipment operators, and supervisors.
4. RESPOND quickly to changes in traffic patterns or emergencies.
5. MAINTAIN a safe environment for workers and motorists by staying alert and proactive.
6. FOLLOW company safety policies and procedures and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
7. WEAR proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
8. PERFORM other duties as assigned to assist with road construction operations.
9. PERFORMS OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Two-way radios
Crash Truck
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of basic traffic control and roadway safety principles.
Familiarity with relevant safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards)
Awareness of construction site protocols and hazard recognition.
Ability to properly set up and remove signage, cones, and barriers.
Skilled in clear and assertive verbal communication for direction motorists and coordinating with crew.
Ability to remain attentive and focused for extended periods in outdoor environments.
Ability to make quick, sound decisions to maintain safety in changing traffic conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to stand for long periods (8+ hours) in various weather conditions.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must pass a criminal background check
Must pass preemployment drug screening
Must be able to stand, walk, and lift up to 25 pounds frequently.
Must be able to tolerate heat, cold, rain, and other environmental elements.
Must have good visual and auditory ability to detect and respond to traffic and communication.
Must be AGILE. The ability to hold yourself and others Accountable, have a personal Growth mindset, ability to act with Integrity, ability to demonstrate Leadership attributes to motivate and support coworkers, and practice Everyday Improvement.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Works outside in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain.
Outdoor work environment, often in high-traffic areas.
Work may involve extended hours, weekends, and travel to multiple job sites.
This is a safety sensitive position due to job responsibilities which include safety-sensitive tasks that require performing duties fraught with risk of injury to others where even a momentary lapse of attention may have grave and disastrous consequences.
