The Senior Construction Engineer coordinates and performs observation of public works, street, highway, bridge, building components, infrastructure, and track right of way on construction projects according to the specific areas of expertise of the inspector; performs related duties as required. This includes on-site observations of construction installations such as materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, safety precautions, minor concrete structures, street light installations, traffic signals, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control installations to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and regulations. The role involves reviewing construction plans, specifications, permits, and participating in meetings to resolve issues with contractors and stakeholders. The engineer may conduct field measurements, ensure safety standards, coordinate materials testing, identify on-site problems, and monitor project deficiencies. They also recommend contract or plan adjustments based on field conditions, maintain records, and calculate progress payments. Additionally, they investigate encroachment and grading complaints. The 2025 Employee Benefits Summary can be found here. Requirements: Knowledge: Wide-ranging experience with standard construction concepts, capable of resolving complex issues effectively. Job Complexity: Handles complex issues and significant projects, exercising judgment in methods and evaluation criteria. Provides consultation to management on important matters, often involving coordination among groups. Supervision: Works independently with minimal instructions, providing guidance to others when needed. Exercises judgment in methods and procedures for new or special assignments. Experience: Typically requires 8 to 12+ years of related experience. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required, along with Illinois Department of Transportation experience and a PE License is expected.
