ABOUT THE POSITION
The Riverside University Health System Medical Center is seeking an experienced Senior Sterile Processing Technician to join our team with the Central Services and Supply Department.

The Senior Sterile Processing Technician serves in a lead capacity and plays a critical role in ensuring the proper sterilization and distribution of surgical instructments and medical equipment. This position is responsible for mentoring and training new and existing staff, maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards, and supporting daily workflow in collaboration with departmental leadership. Under direction, assigns, coordinates, and participates in the work of Sterile Processing Technicians involved in cleaning, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing hospital supplies and equipment; and performs other related duties as required.

The Senior Sterile Processing Technician is the advanced journey and lead level classification in the Sterile Processing Technician series and reports to the Supervising Sterile Processing Technician, Sterile Processing Manager or equivalent level manager. Incumbents exercise a high degree of independent judgement, provide oversight to subordinate staff and perform the most complex assignments requiring extensive knowledge and proficiency.

The Senior Sterile Processing Technician is distinguished from the Supervising Sterile Processing Technician in that the latter is the first line supervisor charged with the full range of supervisory duties.

The Senior Sterile Processing Technician is not a natural progression underfill for the classification of Supervising Sterile Processing Technician. Advancement to the next level is achieved through the County's standard recruitment process.

Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and lift, push, pull, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Schedule:
5/40 - Monday to Friday, with rotating weekends
Hours: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
•Inspect, test, clean, decontaminate, and sterilize returned reusable medical equipment and surgical equipment, supplies and instrumentation, ensuring all parts have been returned and are operable, selecting appropriate cleaning agents and decontamination and sterilization processes; perform minor maintenance and repairs on medical equipment as needed.
•Identify and assemble medical and surgical instrumentation and supplies using count sheets; package in accordance with sterilization technique to be used; generate and attach labels and billing codes; sterilize, and if required, aerate.
•Assemble instruments and supplies for surgery or case/specialty cart procedures using pick lists; distribute sterilized supplies and patient care equipment, maintaining required inventory levels throughout hospital and clinics; check correctness of requisitions and accuracy of inventory and issue supplies; issue prescribed medical supplies and equipment to patients.
•Create and maintain accurate equipment tracking, inventory, sterilization, and testing records and logs using a computer, laser wand, or scanner for barcode entry; run reports; may assist in ordering sterile supplies; may requisition and sign for special order items.
•Store and maintain all sterile supplies and respiratory therapy equipment; stock and maintain processing areas; clean and test sterilizers; keep storage areas clean and orderly; inspect, fold and stack sterilized linen.
•Track equipment sent to outside vendors to ensure return to the proper department after repair.
•Establish and maintain courteous cooperative relations with public, patients, and other personnel.
•Assign, review and coordinate the work of Sterile Processing Technicians.
•Conduct employee in-service training sessions to ensure that techniques and procedures keep pace with industry technology.
•Revise and create policy and procedure manuals; receive and respond to inquiries or complaints from departmental personnel concerning supplies and equipment.
•Inspect work to ensure safety and quality standards are met.
•Ensure that department policies and procedures are followed.
•Provide vacation and temporary relief as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. examination.

Experience: Two years of experience equivalent to the County of Riverside Sterile Processing Technician II or above with responsibility for sterilizing, preparing and issuing medical equipment.

Knowledge of: Medical equipment, supplies and instruments used in an acute care hospital setting; aseptic and sterilization techniques.

Ability to: Follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with others; keep simple records; advise and assist others in the performance of their duties; work with minimal supervision; conduct aseptic training sessions; solve unusual technical problems related to aseptic techniques.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).

A new member is defined as any of the following:
  1. A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in any California Public Retirement System.
  2. A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who was a member with another California Public Retirement System prior to that date, but who is not subject to reciprocity upon joining CalPERS.
  3. A member who first established CalPERS membership prior to January 1, 2013, and who is rehired by a different CalPERS agency after a break in service of greater than six (6) months.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.

VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):

0 < 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4 < 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)

Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.

SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.

HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance)

BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.

DISABILITY:
Employees contribute to State Disability Insurance (SDI), which provides wage replacement benefits for those unable to work due to non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy. SDI also includes Paid Family Leave benefits. The wage replacement rate, as defined by current law, is between 60-70% of wages earned during the SDI eligibility period. Benefits can be coordinated with other available leave balances to provide up to 100% of regular pay.

POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable Memorandum of Understanding.
