Job Title: Superintendent - Commercial Construction Location: Sterling, VA Reports To: Director of Field Operations Company: Vertical Mechanical Group Employment Type: Full-Time | On-Site Position Summary: The Superintendent plays a critical leadership role in overseeing field operations and ensuring that commercial construction projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver with strong leadership, scheduling, and communication skills who can coordinate crews, subcontractors, materials, and safety protocols on active job sites. Key Responsibilities: Site Leadership: Oversee day-to-day field activities, including labor, subcontractors, and material deliveries to ensure smooth workflow and adherence to the project schedule.
Scheduling & Coordination: Work closely with the project manager to develop and maintain short- and long-term schedules. Coordinate with other trades to avoid conflicts and delays.
Quality Control: Monitor installation work for compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable codes. Conduct regular inspections and punch list walks.
Safety Oversight: Enforce job site safety protocols, conduct toolbox talks, and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety policies.
Team Management: Lead, mentor, and supervise field crews. Promote teamwork, accountability, and productivity across all field staff.
Communication: Serve as the primary field contact for project managers, subcontractors, inspectors, and suppliers. Communicate daily progress, delays, and needs.
Documentation: Maintain daily logs, time sheets, safety reports, material delivery logs, and as-built drawings. Submit updates and reports to project leadership as required.
Problem Solving: Quickly identify and resolve field issues, conflicts, and unforeseen conditions that may affect schedule, budget, or quality.
Qualifications: 5+ years of experience as a Superintendent in commercial construction (HVAC, mechanical, or plumbing experience preferred)
Strong knowledge of commercial construction methods, materials, and mechanical systems
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specs, and schedules
Proven ability to manage crews and subcontractors on complex job sites
OSHA 30 Certification (required or obtainable upon hire)
Proficiency in field software (Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, or similar) is a plus
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Valid driver's license with reliable transportation to job sites
