The Department of Theatre and Contemporary Dance, a unit in the College of Arts and Sciences, is comprised of passionate practitioners of theatre and contemporary dance. We examine the place of these arts in society, bringing both classic and original creations to stage. We present our work locally, nationally, and in other parts of the world. We produce plays, dances, original productions, works of scholarship, and publications. Our department explores all facets of professional performance, including technical production and scenic design. Job Summary
Seeking a highly organized, artistic, and technically proficient Associate Costume Director with leadership and mentoring skills to contribute to the training of undergraduate and MFA graduate students. This 12-month full-time position interfaces closely with MFA candidates, guest artists, and undergraduate employees in the implementation of stage costumes and crafts and dance costumes for all department productions including the summer season.
Department Specific Responsibilities Works closely with the Director of Costumes to ensure productive, timely, and safe working studio that prioritizes the education and training of students. Directs the day-to-day operations of the Costume operations studio, in close collaboration with the faculty Costume Director. Works closely with fittings in collaboration with designers, cutter/drapers, and faculty Costume Director. Cultivates a healthy and welcoming studio environment in collaboration with the faculty Costume Director. Oversees and manages all aspects of the costume studio, including theatre costume inventory and dance inventory. Grad students, guest artists, or faculty serve in the roles of designers and drapers/cutters on all productions. Fiduciary responsibility of the annual dance costume budget. Provides patient education and guidance to student costume design and costume makers of varying levels of experience and knowledge. Oversees the distribution of work in the studio. Monitors the quality, execution, and safety of all costume and craft elements during production builds in collaboration with the Costume Director. May include formal instruction of up to 3 to 6 credits per year, depending on the semester. This role works with and educates students all day long and may be listed as the instructor of record for wardrobe credit. The teaching component of this role will function as an mentor and specialist with the opportunity in teaching 1 to 3 credit course per year, as well as 1 special project 1 credit course in area of expertise. Instruction would be 2 x week or 75 minutes of formal instruction, plus prep time and at least 1 hour of office hours per week 140 minutes of formal contact instruction plus office hours and prep time each week. Directs and has oversight of employee and student crews for wardrobe and backstage function. Organization, maintenance, and upkeep of the costume inventory, fabrics, and off-site inventories. Identifies, approves, and procures all materials and supplies as needed for all costumes in collaboration with the Costume Director. Directs costume personnel day-to-day in the execution of costume plans, especially those in dance in collaboration with Costume Director. Adherence to OSHA and workplace safety standards is expected. General Responsibilities Successfully executes the creation of all costumes and accessories for productions in keeping with the high standards of the theater. Drafts and creates original patterns in muslin from designer's renderings or revises patterns from existing costumes. Cuts, drapes, stitches, finishes and tailors original, complex, sophisticated, detailed costumes or performs alterations or repairs of rented or in-stock costumes. Provides expertise, leadership, and full supervision to costume shop staff in their construction of costumes and accessories. Meets with the costume designer in collaboration with the Director of Costume. Recommends options and alternative methods, ideas, and aesthetic choices with an eye to maintaining budget constraints while also realizing artistic results. Manages and directs work-loads and schedules of staff, full time and hourly, to meet all production and performance deadlines and to complete all costumes in faithful accordance to the vision of the designer. Communicates with all professional vendors and theaters regarding sales and rental of all materials, costumes, and notions. Attends all production meetings, dress rehearsals, and performances. Oversees and is responsible for the resolution of costume problems or concerns. Researches period styles and techniques and coordinates with vendors and outside sources for materials and rentals. Provides methods and creative problem solving for all projects. Leads all costume fittings with the cast. Problem solves when situations arise such as the inadequate volume of fabrics or notions, construction of unusual designs, or poor fit or function of the costume. Directs all organization and maintenance of the shop and extensive inventory of all costumes in stock. Meets with departments gathering and organizing all pertinent information regarding costuming in collaboration with the Costume Director. May assist in development of departmental budget. Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) Preferred Bachelor's degree Theatre or similar field and/or a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre or related field WORK EXPERIENCE
Required 4 years in costume design/construction or related field Preferred 3 years of professional or academic theatre production experience a plus Formal or informal teaching experience is a plus as this position may be asked to teach at least 1 formal course per year in an area of costume expertise and interact in the experiential learning on a daily basis LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
