Job Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various heavy machinery, including but not limited to backhoes, excavators, and loaders, to support natural gas and underground utility construction projects. This role demands strict adherence to safety protocols, precise execution of tasks, and collaboration with team members to ensure project success and uphold the company's commitment to safety & quality.
Responsibilities:
- Equipment Operation: Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, excavators, and loaders to perform excavation, trenching, and installation of underground utilities.
- Safety Compliance: Execute all tasks in strict compliance with company safety policies and industry regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
- Site Preparation: Prepare and maintain construction sites, ensuring they are safe and ready for underground utility work.
- Utility Installation Assistance: Aid in the placement of underground pipes and conduits, performing manual labor tasks as necessary, including shoveling, tamping, and using power tools.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment, including monitoring fluid levels, filters, and lubrication, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Material Handling: Load, unload, and distribute materials at job sites, ensuring proper handling and storage.
- Site Cleanup: Remove debris, trash, and hazardous materials from construction areas, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Traffic Control: Implement traffic control measures, including placing signs and signaling equipment operators to facilitate safe movement around the construction site.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to utility emergencies, providing prompt and effective solutions to mitigate risks.
- Documentation: Accurately complete daily reports, equipment logs, and other necessary documentation related to project activities.
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment such as excavators and backhoes with precision and efficiency.
- Safety Awareness: In-depth understanding of equipment safety, operation, and maintenance, with a commitment to upholding safety standards.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret construction plans, safety standards, and specifications accurately.
- Hazard Recognition: Keen attention to identifying unsafe conditions and potential hazards in the work environment.
- Physical Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude to perform tasks effectively.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Valid Hoisting License.
- Valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
- OSHA 10 Certification.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment, preferably in underground utility work.
