JOB DESCRIPTION
The Site Safety Manager is our on-site safety representative responsible for upholding Butler-Cohen’s unwavering commitment to Safety. By continuously monitoring and adapting safety procedures, training subcontractors and ourselves, and instilling a culture of diligence and awareness, the Safety Manager endeavors to ensure a safe and fully compliant work environment for all project personnel. Our Safety Managers are highly engaged with both client and subcontractor site personnel, and as such, play a significant role in establishing and nurturing relationships on site.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records according to company guidelines.
- Analyzing incident reports, metrics, and injury case studies to improve the safety of the environment.
- Implements and reinforces the site-specific safety program in alignment with company policies and directives from the Safety Director.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards, including OSHA & client safety policies.
- Document and investigate accidents or injuries, provide records or evidence as required during lawsuits or legal proceedings, and implement corrective measures meant to reduce future risk.
- Delivers safety training and toolbox talks as directed; ensures attendance and records are maintained in coordination with the safety leadership team.
- Educate and train employees in workplace safety practices, fire prevention, and the correct handling of chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
- Regularly inspects the facility to detect existing or potential accidents and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Employs a proactive approach to managing workplace safety and accident prevention by utilizing Job Hazard Analysis, accident analysis, inspections, and safety education and training.
- Monitor the removal of biological, physical, or chemical hazards from a workplace.
- Supports and coordinates oversight of the following initiatives and programs to ensure compliance and increase awareness:
- Safety Committee
- Incident Investigations
- Emergency and Severe Weather Response Programs
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program
- Knowledge of diverse health effects, illnesses, and accidents associated with specific job functions; works with department business partners within the organization to identify, be aware of, and take action on safety concerns.
- Provide information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to communicate potential safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
- Conducts ergonomic assessments and acts to ensure workplace health.
- Responsible for preparing and submitting reports, including, but not limited to, required accident reports, OSHA logs, Sustainability reporting, EPA, and BLS.
- Demonstrate a Continuous Improvement mindset – through participation in events and activities that lead to financial gain, time savings, and/or waste reduction for the business.
- Act as a resource and provide clarification to the field on regulatory compliance.
- Permit Issuance when required.
- PPE Evaluation, Implementation, and Control.
- Complete safety audits to ensure compliance with plans and procedures.
- Ensure follow-up on open audit action items.
- Review / Coordinate Critical Lift Plans if required.
- Support emergency response.
- Track safety equipment inspections and coordinate with responsible parties for required maintenance.
- Other tasks relating to HSE as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience Required:
- Associate of Arts degree or Associate-level technical degree required.
- A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
- 3–5 years of progressive safety experience and/or training in commercial construction, industrial, or distribution environments.
- OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour certifications required.
- OSHA Outreach Trainer (OSHA OTI) certification preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation required or in progress.
- Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED use are required.
Skills/Abilities Required:
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards, hazard identification, corrective actions, workers’ compensation processes, and environmental health regulations.
- Understanding of human behavior, ergonomics, and physical job demands in construction environments.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and safety-related software platforms (e.g., HRIS systems, audit tracking tools).
- Strong ability to administer First Aid and respond to on-site medical emergencies involving AED equipment.
- Capable of leading safety training sessions, conducting investigations, and writing professional safety documentation.
- Effective communicator with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead site safety culture, influence subcontractor behavior, and enforce regulatory compliance.
Physical and Working Conditions:
This position requires regular presence on active commercial construction sites, involving a mix of indoor and outdoor work. It requires a high level of situational awareness, physical mobility, and adherence to job site safety protocols. The Safety Manager must be comfortable operating in both field and office environments and transitioning between them as needed.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to walk active construction sites multiple times daily, including traversing uneven, sloped, or unstable surfaces (e.g., gravel, dirt, rebar matting).
- Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding to access elevated areas such as roofs, mezzanines, and mechanical spaces.
- Requires frequent physical activity, including bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and prolonged standing, to inspect framing, excavation, formwork, or overhead work.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking without extended breaks.
- Must be able to perform visual inspections at both close range and distance.
- Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and safety alarms and communicate clearly in high-noise environments.
- Must be physically capable of coordinating field activities and walking job sites alongside subcontractors, inspectors, and trade crews throughout the day.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late afternoons, or weekends based on project needs.
- Routine exposure to jobsite hazards, such as elevated noise levels, dust, chemicals, or airborne particles, requires the use of appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
- May be required to enter confined spaces or elevated platforms (with appropriate training and clearance).
- Must be able to navigate around active equipment, temporary structures, and construction-related obstacles.
