Controller – Commercial Construction
Location: San Francisco, CA
Salary Range: $140,000–$180,000 DOE + Excellent Benefits
Full Time | Onsite | Direct Hire
Step into a pivotal leadership role as Controller, where your sharp financial expertise, magnetic people skills, and unwavering commitment to teamwork will help shape the future of a vibrant, forward-thinking Bay Area commercial construction firm. You’ll be at the dynamic center of high-profile, technically challenging projects ranging from intricate renovations and sophisticated build-outs to architecturally distinctive interiors and transformative commercial spaces.

Join a close-knit group that values exceptional financial acumen, ingenious collaboration, and bold leaders who pair a strong sense of urgency with genuine kindness. In this hands-on, high-impact role, you’ll thrive in a fast-moving, supportive culture where excellence, trust, and your ability to drive results are celebrated. If you’re driven, insightful, and passionate about making a visible impact in a company known for tackling some of the Bay Area’s most interesting and demanding construction challenges, this is the unique opportunity that will launch your career to exciting new heights.

What you’ll do:
  • Lead preparation and review of all project and company financials, turning complex data into actionable insights for leadership and project teams.
  • Oversee job costing, budgeting, process improvement, financial analysis and an accounting team of 3 – always with transparency, urgency, and accuracy.
  • Guide and uplift your accounting team, mentoring with patience and ensuring everyone has what they need to succeed.
  • Foster a culture of trust, accountability, and open communication, quickly assisting others and stepping in when the team needs an extra hand.
  • Act as a reliable resource, balancing your own priorities while willingly wearing “multiple hats” and adapting quickly to changing needs.
  • Manage annual audits and maintain sound controls to safeguard assets and minimize risk.
  • Demonstrate ownership by identifying opportunities to optimize processes, enhance collaboration, and proactively solve challenges.
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning, contributing both your expertise and your positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ensure compliance with tax laws, company policies, and industry regulations while keeping your finger on the pulse of financial trends.
  • Support team well-being and development through training, guidance, and a genuine investment in their success.
What we’re looking for:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA is a definite plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years in accounting/financial leadership roles within commercial construction experience is essential, with at least 3 years leading teams.
  • Expertise in construction finance: job costing, project billing, contracts, forecasting, etc.
  • Comfort with construction accounting platforms (e.g., Procore, Trimble Spectrum) and strong Excel skills.
  • Attention to detail and high personal standards for accuracy, timeliness, and integrity in financial reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex financial concepts kindly and clearly to varied audiences.
  • Willingness to jump in and assist team members with processes, whether mentoring or helping resolve tricky issues.
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency, prioritize multiple demands, and bring energy and positivity even when busy.
  • Flexible team player who doesn’t mind “wearing different hats” and can adapt gracefully to shifting priorities.
  • Proven commitment to the success and well-being of the team as a whole.
  • HR exposure is a bonus – if you’ve helped with onboarding, benefits, or employee relations in a past role, let us know!
This is an incredible opportunity for someone that has their sights set on growing into a CFO role and enjoys combining technical capability with true leadership in an environment that values collaboration, kindness, and growth.
