Why does the job exist?

The primary purpose of the General Construction Building Inspector is to perform on-site inspections of construction projects throughout New Mexico to ensure code compliant construction of residential, commercial and public buildings. The General Construction Building Inspector will ensure that construction projects conform to adopted construction codes to promote the general welfare of the people of New Mexico by providing that construction is completed within the requirements of the Construction Industries Licensing Act, it's regulation and general construction code to include life safety and property protection. This position in primarily to provide inspection service to Valencia, Socorro Counties as well as parts of Catron, Torrance Counties ans Southern end of Albuquerque.

How does it get done?

Organization of daily schedules for maximum efficiency and minimum travel, researching and familiarization of current codes as they apply to conducting field inspections to protect life and property of New Mexico residents. Communicating daily with supervisors, Inspectors, contractors, homeowners, and engineers as well as fellow inspectors from other CID Bureaus as necessary to ensure properly permitted, licensed and code compliant construction. Also providing assistance in other inspection areas when determined necessary as well as any other duties as directed by the incumbent's direct supervisor.

The constituents of New Mexico to include homeowners, contractors, architects and engineers.

Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidate would have the highest degree of integrity and professionalism, have extensive field experience in General Construction, as well as experience in general construction inspection field and possess a New Mexico General Inspector Certification as well as the National Commercial and Residential Inspector Certifications. The ideal candidate would also be bilingual (English/Spanish) and reside in Valencia/Socorro County area.

Minimum Qualification

If not already certified in a specialty as set out below, each Inspector must pass the examination of a national certifying organization recognized by the Construction Inspection Division within one (1) year of employment; and each Inspector must then remain certified by such certifying organization in at least one (1) of the following specialties:

General Construction Inspectors: three (3) years foreman level experience in General Construction; OR two (2) years of experience as a Construction Inspector. Applicants for a general construction position may substitute technical, university, or college training in a general construction field for up to two (2) years of the three (3) years of foreman-level experience. The equivalency shall be calculated such that one (1) year of technical; university or college training shall equal one-half (1/2) a year of foreman-level experience. Further, in conjunction with the technical, university or college training, the applicant must demonstrate at least one (1) year of related field experience in their trade at a foreman-level position.

Employment Requirements

Must be able to pass a preemployment background check and maintain a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions

Incumbent will move about construction job sites in all types of weather and conditions. Climbing ladders, negotiating ditches and trenches and avoiding hazards typically related to construction sites. The incumbent must lift up to 50 pounds. Work is performed using a personal computer for extended periods. This position may work some weekends, holidays and occasional overnight travel may be required.
