This is an anticipated vacancy 09/01/2025.
This position is located in the Rockingham County Resident Engineer’s office and will serve as the Senior Assistant Resident Engineer. The ideal candidate will be responsible for administering complex highway construction contracts and overseeing project management for compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes and design needs. This position will be responsible for contract administration of all types of construction projects including Central and Division let contracts. This position requires proficiency in plan reading, highway engineering calculations and familiarity in the operations of survey instruments. Other duties include the preparation of monthly estimates, final estimates and other record keeping required during the life of a contract construction project.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Knowledge of contract administration to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with the department’s specifications, standard drawings and policies
Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex projects.
Experience supervising the work of others, to include supervision of Construction Engineering Inspection personnel, to meet department goals
Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Experience in the management of multiple projects and directing multiple work crews
Additional Expectations:
Possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and construction methods, materials and equipment. Ability to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor’s personnel and the general public. Ability to make field engineering decisions. Employee may be exposed to hazards including but not limited to high traffic volumes, heavy construction equipment, heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Employee must be able to lift 40-50 pounds, navigate uneven terrain and work at night and weekends if necessary. Must be able to acquire various certifications pertaining to job duties. Safety toe footwear is required for this position. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
