City Building Inspector
The Department of Design and Construction, Facilities Division, is looking to fill two Senior Building Construction Inspector positions. These positions independently inspect all phases of the construction of public structures and buildings, park and recreational facilities, the renovation, restoration, and redesign of all City-related grounds, etc. Special Working Conditions : Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather and hazardous conditions at construction sites. May be required to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time.

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : FIVE (5) years of experience in inspecting or supervising building construction work.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of standard practices, methods, processes and tools used in building construction, including standard formulae of structural stability and safety and the accepted safety standards; and methods of inspection and the basic principles of statistics and equilibrium as applied to heavy construction and the ability to apply proper building inspection methods; read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints; deal tactfully with building contractors and workers; and prepare reports and keep records.
Substitution : An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university will substitute for up to two years of the required five years of experience in inspecting or supervising a variety of building construction work.
A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university will substitute for up to three years of the required five years of experience in inspecting or supervising a variety of building construction work.
