About this Opportunity
Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for two new Construction Mechanics to join our Sewer Construction team. Classified as a Grade 4 Collection System by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Brunswick County Public Utility provides wastewater (sewer) services to nearly 30,000 sewer retail customers across a large service. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of service to our customers every day.
The Construction Mechanic works as part of a crew to perform a variety of both manual labor and specialized skilled work to assist in the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of the county's water and wastewater systems (including water and sewer lines, services, pumps, and valves). Primary responsibility is the installation of sewer grinder packages. Work may include:
hand digging to locate buried utilities.
loading/unloading heavy equipment.
operating a variety of equipment (i.e., pump and vacuum trucks, jet/vac equipment, jetter machines, directional drill, excavators, backhoes, power tools, hand tools, etc.)
cutting and removing damaged sewer pipes.
installing new sewer pipes/fittings.
replacing sewer manhole rings/covers.
responding to sanitary sewer backup and overflows.
manually moving gas powered pumps into place and setting pump hoses.
inspecting and cleaning sanitary sewer mains on a routine basis to prevent system blockages and maintain compliance.
installing new water and wastewater lines and mains
testing for, locating, and repairing water leaks and deficiencies found within the water and wastewater system
grinder tank installation
performing taps on street water mains and inspecting new service connections
assisting with setup/teardown of traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment.
backfilling excavations.
worksite cleanup (i.e., materials hauling/disposal, site restoration activities, etc.).
maintaining and repairing equipment as required.
The Construction Mechanic reports to a Crew Supervisor and is responsible for taking appropriate safety measures and following established safety policies and procedures while performing all work. This position will be placed on an on-call rotation (one week every 5-6 weeks) that requires a response to emergency calls both after hours and during inclement weather conditions.

Career Ladder
Brunswick County Public Utilities utilizes a career ladder program for advancement which allows employees to further their career in the sewer/water construction field through promotion as advanced grades of NC Collections Operator Certification are attained. Promotions include a 5% pay increase when all criteria are met. Individuals who do not possess a NC Collections Operator Certification will be hired at a Mechanic I level.
Training and testing fees for wastewater operator certification are paid for by Brunswick County.
Placement as a Mechanic II, III or IV based on NC Collections Operator Certification level and experience.
Employees with appropriate certification will be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Back-up ORC as necessary.
In addition to the Career Ladder, Brunswick County provides other opportunities to assist employees in their career development, including extensive safety training and in-house CDL training (preparing staff for licensing with the NC DMV).
Education and Experience
High school diploma (or GED) and experience in sewer and/or water construction; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Experience related to the following fields is highly desirable.
Construction (grading, storm drains, site work, builder, plumber, utility construction, road construction)
Landscaping (installer, maintenance, irrigation)
Mechanic (heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems)
Farming (manual labor, equipment operator)
Moving Company (labor, truck driver)
Tech School Student (mechanical)
Valid NC or SC Driver License required. Must possess Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or attain during the probationary period.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including motor vehicles, pumps, tractors, lawn mowers, generators, water pumps, etc., and mechanic's hand tools. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, reach, lift, and bend. Must be able to work in confined areas.
