General Summary
The Grade Checker is responsible for safely measuring and setting grade stakes and using GPS equipment to ensure appropriate grades, excavations, and fill embankments.
** Granite Construction-Utah is a union signatory contractor. This position is covered by the Operating Engineers Local 3** Due to collective bargaining agreements in place, we are required to hire through union referrals first.

Essential Job Accountabilities
Reads and understands survey stakes, drawings/plan sets, sketches, and drawings to determine grade specifications required for fill, sloping or excavation operations.
Reads, measures, and sets grade stakes, along highway right-of-way to determine grade specifications in sloping highways and fill embankments utilizing survey and/or measuring instruments and hand tools.
Measures horizontally and vertically, in specified ratio, from survey stake to juncture of embankment and initial excavation, utilizing survey and/or measuring instruments, GPS equipment, and hand tools.
Observe excavating activities to verify conformance to stake references and notify equipment operators and supervision of deviations.
Inspect, clean, and maintain tools, equipment, and machinery.
Perform job site clean-up and maintain job site free of hazards.
May perform a variety of physical tasks including but not limited to operating equipment and machinery.
Perform other duties as required.
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Work Experience
(2) years+ of grade checking experience required.
Grade or pave experience with understanding of grading, drainage, survey staking.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to read and understand drawings/plan sets, or pictures and understand how they would look as solid objects with height, width, or depth
Evaluate information using measurable standards
Attain set standards of accuracy
Perform a variety of duties which may change often
Make judgements from experience or factual data
Follow safety measures
Work within precise limits of accuracy.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work, day, swing, and nights shifts (occasionally extended hours).
Physical Demands
Ability to work in constant exposure to outside elements, in all weather conditions.
Ability to work in a safety sensitive construction setting, including exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
Physical dexterity, stamina, and excellent hand-eye coordination with ability to see (naturally or with correction), grasp, assemble and lift objects,
Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch and walk for extended periods and on uneven surfaces.
Ability to climb ladders onto equipment or other objects.
Lifting, pushing, pulling of heavy items weighing up to 50 lbs. or more.
